Hulu’s new romantic comedy is definitely one for the books! Three Ways follows Stacey who decides to partake in a threesome with her new beau and an unknown, mysterious woman she has never met before - as the film tells the story through three different viewpoints.

The film starts the first viewpoint on Stacey Johnson (Andrea Lewis) laying in bed at home trying to talk herself out of a situation. She gets a phone call from her best friend, Ebony (Toccara Jones) as she contemplates about her upcoming threesome. Then the film transitions to an argument she’s having with her then-boyfriend, Dante (Lawrence Robinson), as he expresses his frustration about their sex life and calls her “boring”, also noting after he ends things, “it’s competitive out there.”

One night she goes to her new beau’s house, Justin (Jerrel O’Neal), feeling nervous and doubtful about what she’s getting herself into. Once she meets their other counterpart, Lorraine (Brittany S. Hall), a beautiful, enigmatic woman, we get an insider to Stacey’s thoughts and her skepticism on Justin and Lorraine’s connection. Stacey has a hard time loosening up as they indulge in smoking weed, drinking wine, and taking mushrooms to ease the awkwardness.

The story transitions through flashbacks leading up to their epic encounter and throughout the night as we navigate their inner thoughts. Getting deeper into the movie we explore: Stacey’s story as someone who is sexually awkward, seen as a prude, and dislikes particular sexual acts, Justin who is in an interracial relationship with a white woman but has thoughts about Stacey, and Lorraine who has a teenage daughter, experienced throuple relationships, and a lives with a 60-year-old man.

I enjoyed watching Andrea Lewis in this movie being a huge fan of hers since Degrassi: The Next Generation. It was also fun to see Toccara Jones in this movie as well, since she was definitely a fan favorite of mine during Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model. All the actors play into their roles exceptionally well making this highly enjoyable.

Three Ways is hilarious, witty, sexy, and very relatable. Director and writer, Jamal Dedeaux, delivers an exceptional story and anyone watching can possibly relate to the characters’ experience. I love how the movie explores the realities of threesomes, and how this movie is told in different ways so the story isn’t completely one-sided. Unlike the expectations one may have when watching porn, the reality is one may either feel excluded, uncomfortable, or very competitive. This is a fun recommended watch!

Three Ways is now streaming on Hulu. Rated TV-MA with a runtime of 92 minutes.
